American Bison

Description:

The American Bison is the largest land mammal in North America. Bulls may weigh as much as 318 to 1,000 kg (700 to 2,200 lb), but some bulls may get heavier. Cows are smaller and tend towards brown. Bulls are brown with darker necks and heads. Fur on the front quarters tend to be thicker, especially in winter when these animals tend to face storms.

Habitat:

Prairies and savannas, but can also be found in open forests and forest clearings.

I don't think there is an animal that symbolizes the US west more than plains bison. They are fascinating animals. Glad you enjoyed the photo. Ha! Did you notice the prairie dog in the upper left of the photo. I didn't notice it until just now....grin. Two icons in a single photo!
