Greater Banded Hornet

Vespa tropica

Description:

Winged. Maroon head. Abdomen bears a broad yellow band and tapers into black. Able to sting.

Habitat:

I put out fruits for the bird and in the last few days the monsoon rain has caused the ripe mangoes to fall from the trees in my yard and get bruised. The birds, bees, butterflies and sundry other creatures love these fruits and it is a joy to watch them fight (birds) or share (insects). My rooftop terrace.

Notes:

The second insect is a paper wasp and it has got its spotting uploaded already. These two stinging insects sometimes " buzz" each other...but that is all...the play never gets rough.
