A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), sometimes known as the sea hawk, fish eagle or fish hawk, is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey. It is a large raptor, reaching more than 60 cm (24 in) in length and 180 cm (71 in) across the wings. It is brown on the upperparts and predominantly greyish on the head and underparts, with a black eye patch and wings.
Look for Ospreys around nearly any body of water: saltmarshes, rivers, ponds, reservoirs, estuaries, and even coral reefs. Their conspicuous stick nests are placed in the open on poles, channel markers, and dead trees, often over water.
It was a little overcast in the morning when I first got out, which caused the white sky background in the first 2 shots, but it cleared up later in the day when I caught the Osprey of the 3rd photo in a tree. They were out in bigger numbers than I have ever seen at Eastern Neck, today.
