Common Cave Cricket, female

Hadenoecus subterraneus

Description:

Please check out the other images in this spotting for detail. Subterranean cricket with extremely long legs. Pinkish body. Slightly upturned, blade-shaped ovipositor. These crickets appear to have a very limited range to limestone caves in Kentucky and possibly southern Indiana (per BugGuide). This wingless species finds mates through the use of pheromones instead of chirping.

Habitat:

Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky. Underground in limestone caves.

Notes:

These crickets were seen in many of the caves we visited, clinging to walls and ceilings. The females are much larger than the males.
