Shrub or small tree. Reddish brown to grey bark, thin and smooth when young, older ones with elongate fissures separating long, narrow plates with small scales. Edible flowers are high in vitamine C, and the young green seed pods may be eated raw, boiled, or sauteed. Bark is reported to have some medicinal value
