Liatris pycnostachya
Stems are often 3 to 4 feet tall and end in a long spike of small purple flower heads, each with fewer than 8 flowers. At the base of the flower heads are pointed and the tips curve outward.
Spotted near the Tamarac Visitor Center. This plant is found in dry prairies in south and western Minnesota.
Plant is sometimes known as the Kansas Gay Feather.
