Spotted Owlet

Athene brama

Description:

Found these two little owlets, one sitting on a wire fence, and the other on a nearby branch, in my college campus grounds one morning. A friend and I rushed back to the spot with our cameras and got some really close up shots. The little guy on the branch was being bothered by ants, and it seemed it couldn't fly. By the afternoon, when we came back to see them, he had fallen on the ground. We took him to our room, gave him some water and soon he was hopping around. His claws, though small, were pretty sharp, and we were afraid he might accidentally pierce into our skin as he perched on our fingers. Soon after we went back to the spot and let him hop on to a branch.
