A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Colinus virginianus
This is a Northern Bobwhite Quail. They are brown and black patterned. Males have the bold black and white head as pictured above. They are a small bird with a rounded body. Females have a white belly and the heads are a brown and black pattern. They grow to ten inches long with a 115 inch wingspan
Bobwhite quail are found in fields, open pine forests. They are found in the central and eastern United States as well as Washington, Oregon and parts of Mexico.
The numbers of bobwhite quail have significantly declined in the last several years due to habitat loss. When a quail is threatened they will crouch in effort to blend to environment. This picture was taken around 1:30 in the afternoon on November 2.
