They seem to be one of the most common things I spot - but always at a different stage of their lives so it's very interesting to watch. I haven't got close enough to smell them though ;-)

Nice spotting. I have learned to love these guys. They wave their foul smelling tails to keep hungry birds away and parasitoid flies and wasps. This does not always work as seen in pic 4 here where one is infested with eggs http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/885...
