jewel beetle; fir borer

Buprestis aurulenta

Description:

Jewel-like emerald beetle with a copper underside.

Habitat:

Temperate rain forest. They lay their eggs in Douglas fir.

Notes:

The third image is of the sawdust left when a new beetle baby emerges from its egg laid in the wood. Often such fine sawdust is the only clue that they are around, and you can look above it to find the neat hole in the wood where it emerged. While they technically cause damage, I've never seen a live tree wrecked by them, and it's only lumber that I've seen them put the occasional hole in. They're so pretty, I don't object.

Fabulous coloured beetle. Love that he's on his back for pic 2 :).
