Organ Pipe Mud Dauber

Trypoxylon politum

Description:

All black solitary wasp that builds sectioned tubes out of mud. The tubes contain several cells that an egg is laid in as well as a spider for the larvae to feed on once it hatches. The second picture is a spider on the ground below the nest that is going to be food for one of the larvae.

Habitat:

On a wall outside of the Park Office.

Notes:

If you hear a strange buzzing sound during the early summer it might very well be one of the wasps sealing off a cell inside the tube. Keep an eye on the tube to watch the wasp build it and drag spiders inside!
