Eastern bluebirds (box #4, brood #2)

Sialia sialis

Description:

Neat, cup shaped, woven nest typically 100% fine grass or pine needles. Cup may be in the back of the box. Occasionally bits of fur or a few feathers, or even some hair (e.g., from a horse). Fairly deep, often cylindrical nest cup - usually 3-4" deep, with the cup portion 2.5" in diameter and about 2.25" deep.

Habitat:

Semi rural bluebird trail. We have been creating a wildlife habitat since April 2011 & received NWF certification last fall. Our plan included creating a small bluebird trail of 7 boxes & planting around 100 trees to provide wildlife corridors & places for the male bluebirds to perch to guard the nest. Currently 5 of the 7 boxes are occupied - 4 by bluebirds & 1 by tree swallows.

Notes:

Just two weeks after the last brood of 4 successfully fledged & we already have a new nest & 4 eggs in the box! I'm assuming this is a different breeding pair as bluebird parents typically feed & care for their young for 20-30 days after they have fledged.
