Libellula flavida
This one wouldn't stay put for long- it was off and hunting again before I could really observe it.
This spotting happened at a bog in the piedmont region of SC.

I think I can rule out Needham's based on the front of the thorax. This is from Bugguide. http://bugguide.net/node/view/551698/bgi.... My dragonfly's thorax has a brown front, not pale. I can't rule out auripennis yet though.
I think the yellow-sided has dark wing tips. http://www.giffbeaton.com/skimmers.htm
Auntnance, how can you tell the difference between Needham's Skimmer and the Yellow-Sided?
it was pure luck...hand held shots! I forgot my monopod that day. Nikon D90 with a 150mm Sigma macro
I did see those. They were pretty amazing. You've got a sick lens for your camera to get that kind of detail!
hey man, did you see the mites on the dragonfly that you gave me the I.D. for? I think they are from the famil ceratopogonidae....I posted a close up of the mites in the next photo. check it out.
