Goldfish

(Carassius auratus)

Description:

•A large growing fish belonging to the Carp family. Colour can vary from solid orange, yellow, white or black to multi colours, such as a white base with red and black blotches. The body is chunky and rounded with relatively large visible scales. Healthy Goldfish are long-living fish which should achieve over 10-15 years in good care, some to around 20-40 years old. •Common Goldfish should get between 10"-12" in body length, Fancies between 5"-10" in body length. Lengths exclude the tail fin.

Habitat:

•The best habitat for a goldfish would be a fishtank, where the fish can grow. •Wild Goldfish: Wild goldfish would live in ponds, or small lakes of fresh water.

Notes:

GOLDFISH TYPES: •Goldfish may also lose their golden color , or rather any goldfish color, by varying the spectrum of light under which they are kept, thus causing the scales to change color over a period of time. •There are mainly two types of goldfish. They are the egg-shaped body goldfish and the flat body type. The flat body types generally are the hardiest, most competitive , and easiest to care for - thus they are most suited for beginners. Flat body type goldfish include the common, comet, wakin, jikin, and shubunkin goldfish. Some of the more popular round or egg-shaped goldfish include the fantail, ryukin, veiltail, oranda, pearlscale, telescope-eyed, black moor, ranchu, bubble-eye , and many others. It is important to note that most egg-shaped goldfish, with the exception of the fantail, ryukin, and black moor, are not suited to be kept in an outdoor environment such as a pond.

Great information! We keep several variety of flat bodied goldfish along with our Koi in the outdoor water garden. They are super easy to care for, and winter over very well given that we keep a trough heater in the ponds for air gas exchange holes in the winter months. A side note for anyone wanting to keep goldfish in water gardens: They will reproduce! and they do so in abundance. While most will not make it to maturity, the ones that will, can soon over populate your ponds. It's best to keep a balance, and or have a local pet shop where you can take the medium sized goldfish. :-)
