A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Cyprinus carpio
Cyprinus carpio, commonly known as "common carp" or "European carp", is a widespread freshwater fish of eutrophic waters in lakes and large rivers in Europe and Asia.... The species has also been domesticated and introduced into environments worldwide, and is often considered a destructive invasive species, being included in the list of the world's 100 worst invasive species. Ironically, the native wild populations are considered vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).... Although tolerant of most conditions, common carp prefer large bodies of slow or standing water and soft, vegetative sediments. (Wikipedia) PS: The third photo also shows another of the lake's fish species - a young "speckled longfin eel" (Anguilla reinhardtii).
Spotted in the freshwater lake at the University of Queensland's St. Lucia Campus, Brisbane. Recent heavy rains have started to break up a serious algal bloom that has affected water quality during the recent drought. However, carp are able to tolerate water with very low oxygen levels caused by such blooms, by gulping air at the surface. https://www.uq.edu.au/news/article/2019/...

First time I have ever seen carp in the lake, and I've been looking for fish... any fish. I've seen tiny fry (species unknown), but never large fish. Tilapia have also been reported in the lake, but I've yet to see any.
Yes too common.
