Red-Tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Description:

I usually see these birds gliding high up over open grassy areas where they can scan the ground for prey, so I was very surprised to see this hawk in the oak tree canopy in front of my house. The other birds made a big commotion which drew my eye.

Habitat:

Suburban oak trees. More typically I spot this bird in flight over the grassy swaths around the nearby mall parking lots.
