giant red sea urchin

Strongylocentrotus franciscanus

Description:

largest of the sea urchins, bright red

Habitat:

tide pools, Yaquina Head Natural Area

Notes:

These are on the far end of how big the species get. Apparently they can live to upwards of 200 years old, so this must be a real elder. In the picture there's a seaweed leaf stuck on top in the middle--that's not part of the urchin.
