Great White Heron

Ardea herodias occidentalis

Habitat:

Spotted on a short highway bridge between two subtropical, coastal islands surrounded by mangroves.

Notes:

The taxonomic status of the Great White Heron is a matter of some dispute. At one time it was considered a color variant or "morph" of the Great Blue Heron. Now it is often recognized as a distinct subspecies, although some ornithologists argue in favor of its designation as a completely separate species.
