Tube spittlebugs

Family Clastopteridae: Machaerotinae

Description:

Calcareous tapered tubes attached to stems of eucalyptus. 12mm.

Habitat:

Smaller branches of eucalyptus.

Notes:

A type of hopper. These tubes are built by the nymphs of tube spittlebugs. The nymphs live inside immersed in their own liquid excretions coming out daily to feed. The adults are usually greenish and black coloured.
