purple gallinule

porphyrio martinica

Description:

bright purple, blue, and green birds of the rail family. these two gallinules were feeding off of fire flag seeds and it was quite interesting to see them climb 6 feet up on this little tiny brach and still get to the top. they were very elusive for awhile and were underneath the fire flag brush with some sora. later they decided that people were not a danger and climbed up 3 feet away from the boardwalk for a photo shoot.

Habitat:

like most rails they prefer fresh water marsh.
