Callistemon lace makers

Lophyrotoma zonalis

Description:

A team of miniature lacemakers work their way across a callistemon leaf.

Habitat:

Callistemon sp. in suburban parkland.

Notes:

The callistemon was heavily infested. As they get larger they separate and work alone devouring the whole leaf including veins. The adults are rarely seen compared to the larvae as they only live for a couple of weeks after pupation and don't feed.
order: HYMENOPTERA
superfamily: TENTHREDINOIDEA
family: PERGIDAE
subfamily: Pterygophorinae

They could be good martin. I'm finding it hard to determine just how 'fixed' all these sawfly larvae are to a particular plant species. Some are and some aren't. And it's also somewhat puzzling how the different larvae species can look so similar depending what stage they are at and especially when the adults differ so much. Still... maybe they're not as tricky as some of the mushrooms !! 8~]

They are really quite attractive. What do you think of these for the adults? http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/showima...
