American coot

Fulica americana

Description:

Unlike the webbed feet of ducks, coots have broad, lobed scales on their lower legs and toes that fold back with each step in order to facilitate walking on dry land. This one had been walking around on shore to judge from the tracks in the sand; why it died is a mystery - as far as I could see, it didn't have injuries so perhaps it died of old age, a heart attack or some accident?

Habitat:

Jordan Lake
