White Elderberry

Sambucus gaudichaudiana

Description:

Clusters of translucent creamy white ovoid berries on an approximately one foot tall plant. The berries resembled gooseberries or white currants but the leaves were nothing like those of the gooseberry plant. The plant looked like a dahlia plant with medium-sized soft leaves with serrated margins. There were no flowers on the plant.

Habitat:

This plant was growing beside a walking track, in a shaded area in a nature reserve. Native to South Eastern Australia - cool forest. Also seen in coastal rainforest.

Notes:

My thanks to Vinny for the ID. Family: Adoxaceae

Vinny, thanks so much for the ID. I wish I'd known, I'd have tasted some. Well, I'll be on the lookout for these, now.

Haven't tried it myself but apparently they make a wine out of the berry

Pretty berries. I thought goose berries too, but if the leaves don't match?
