i added some more photos showing the rest of the body, if you're still interested.

i've long second guessed myself about this being a dobsonfly, due to the feathery antennae which dobsonflies lack. thank you for your sugesstion

This is a beautiful find! Do you have any views with the whole body? I am fairly certain that this is actually a species of Fishfly (either a Spring Fishfly or a Summer Fishfly). They are related to the Dobsonfly. Dobsonflies have different looking antennae. Here is a link to the BugGuide page for the Eastern Dobsonfly: http://bugguide.net/node/view/4873

The Spring and Summer Fishflies are very similar looking with slight color variation on the head and thorax mainly and have some overlap in flying time. Check out this link to compare to yours.
