butterfly

Description:

1/12 to 2 inch butterfly. Gray, white, and black with a small orange "eye" on each wing.

Habitat:

High on the southern slope of Bottle Peak, Colorado, located in the Vasquez Mountains near Winter Park. The spotting was around 11,300 feet elevation. This butterfly was in great abundance over about a 100 yard section of the grassy mountain slope. I have spent significant time in this alpone environment over nearly 30 years and have never noticed this type before.
