Black Rat Snake

Pantherophis obsoletus

Description:

Baby black rat snake, only about a foot long. Black on top of the body and white underneath. Non-venomous and extremely common.

Habitat:

Warming itself in a spot of sunshine on the forest floor, about twenty feet from the road.

Notes:

I nearly stepped on this little guy today. He tried rattling his tail on the leaves to make me think he's a rattlesnake but he was so small that you couldn't even hear it.

Are you positive it's a black rat? It looks more like it's a southern black racer.
