Osage Copperhead

Agkistrodon contortrix phaeogaster

Description:

Found in our chicken coop curled up below the heat lamp for our chicks. It measured at just over 2 ft in length.

Notes:

It actually bit one of our chicks on the leg. The snake was removed from the coop, chick was brought inside with bruising on the leg/thigh, the leg semi-paralyzed, rapid breathing, and lethargy. The chick survived the night, regained movement of the leg by the next day, and was up and eating/drinking by the next afternoon. The chick is still alive, and is now named Snake-bite. :-)

Thanks! The chick did recover, but is smaller than the other chicks. Most likely because it took some days for her to recover enough to eat regularly. Chicks do grow fast and require a lot of food to do so. Her growth is probably moderately stunted due to the incident, but she is still thriving. She is also much friendlier due to the extra human contact and will jump in your lap for affection now.

Yes welcome to Project Noah! Cool copperhead! I think this is an Osage copperhead because the southern copperhead occurs south of Versailles. A range map can be found here http://mdc.mo.gov/sites/default/files/re...
