The Old Man of the Woods

Strobilomyces sp.

Description:

Interesting mushroom with a shaggy looking cap. Dark purplish-gray, irregular surface with pale coloration between. Pored underside. Mottled purplish-gray on stem. Growing from the root side of a fallen tree. I kept the fourth picture, though out of focus, because of the habitat area and you can see a bit more of the area from where the mushroom originated.

Habitat:

Temperate forest. Nolin Lake State Park, Kentucky.
