O beija-flor-preto é uma ave apodiforme da família Trochilidae. Era conhecido como beija-flor-preto-e-branco e denominado com o nome científico de Melanotrochilus fuscus. Características Esta espécie de beija-flor possui em média 12,6 centímetros. O colorido contrastante vistoso das retrizes é exibido quando o pássaro expande a cauda em um leque branco cortado em duas metades pelas centrais negras ou quando abre e fecha rápido as caudais. O branco da cauda continua até os flancos e forma uma faixa sobre o crisso. Os indivíduos ainda mais jovens são negros quase que totalmente manchados de pardo e de cauda canela ou negra sendo brancas somente as retrizes laterais. Espécie sem dimorfismo sexual. Apresenta uma voz aguda, que lembra a de insetos ou de morcegos. Possuem vozes diferentes para expressar ataque, alarma. “tli, tli, tli”. Alimentação A base da alimentação é o açúcar, mas também alimenta-se de pequenos invertebrados, principalmente aracnídeos. Reprodução O vôo nupcial consiste em perseguições ziguezagueantes à fêmea. O casal sobe as alturas parando a cada lance, de aproximadamente 20 metros, defronte um do outro em vôo de libração. Em seguida regressam ao pouso onde excitam-se abrindo e fechando rapidamente as asas.
