Tree swallow (box #6 brood #1)

Tachycineta bicolor

Description:

This nest has 6 small white eggs which are hard to see because tree swallows cover their eggs with feathers.

Habitat:

Semi rural. We have been creating a wildlife habitat since April 2011 & received NWF certification last fall. Our plan included creating a small bluebird trail of 7 boxes & planting around 100 trees to provide wildlife corridors & places for the male bluebirds to perch to guard the nest. Currently 5 of the 7 boxes are occupied - 4 by bluebirds & 1 by tree swallows.

Notes:

Box 6 of our small bluebird trail is occupied by tree swallows! Both mom & dad kept a close watch from the telephone wires overhead while I was checking out the nest box.

Sadly I checked the nest today & all the babied were dead. It looked like either they had been abandoned as newborns or something had happened to the mom.

Photo added of new born chicks. Sorry it's so blurry but it was hard to focus on them because of all the feathers!

I went to check on the eggs today but mom refused to budge from her nest!
