Amplexus is where male amphibians clutch onto females during courtship and mating. Most amphibians have external fertilization, where the eggs are fertilized by the male after being expelled by the female. That's where amplexus comes in handy. Being close to the female and holding on tight allows for easy sperm transfer onto the eggs as they are laid. Here's another example of amphibians in amplexus:
