American White Pelican

Pelecanus erythrorhynchos

Description:

Monotypic large white bird ~ that generally teams up to 'fish' for dinner. Breeding is the big thing on Fresh water lakes and large ponds. i've heard that the immatures are generally relegated to Rivers while the mating pairs inhabit the finer marshes and lakes of the North and Central West US.

Habitat:

They like marshy Water deep enuff to hold fish; and generally nest on islands free of walking predators. They're big enuff that they can handle the accipitors.

Notes:

i think if i had to be a bird this one would be it ~ one of the few birds i've seen who really just like to get up and Fly ... circling higher and higher ~ soaring to their hearts content. Pix were taken at the Bowdoin NWR just outside of Malta, Montana on the 15 mile Auto Tour ~ just a fabulous opportunity to see the wild birds up close
