Northern Water Snake

Nerodia sipedon

Description:

Large snake, about 3.5-4 feet long (estimate) and stout, with black bands on a brown back. Black tongue. Shy and retreating, but it let me sit within three feet of it snapping pictures, and it just stayed still.

Habitat:

Riverside, hidden by vegetation. Blends in well with plants and leaf litter. Found around sunset.
