Five-lined Skink, adult male

Eumeces fasciatus

Description:

Same species as the skinks with the blue tails, but they get duller in color as they mature. The breeding males have a red-orange head, like this one. I saw him chasing around a slightly smaller skink that still had its bright coloring. I wonder whether that was a female or a male it perceived as a potential rival.

Habitat:

Trees and rocks next to river. In the first three photos, it is on a rock wall right over the water. Ben Burton Park.
