Nemoptera

Nemoptera bipennis

Description:

The summer is so close here in southern Spain. It is time to watch the adult of Nemoptera bipennis flying around the Pine trees. This is one of the most beautiful species of the Neuroptera order.

Habitat:

It lives near the sand ground patch between Pine trees (Pinus pinea) in the southern Spain, flying on the grass carpet which grows in the sand patches.

Notes:

Commonly named as 'lion-and', due to its larvae, which are active predator of ants.

Is it a 3D picture... unable to see it clearly... amazing texture and exposure.

Thanks for the comments.

These adult stage of Neuroptera (from the family Nemopteridae) are quite beautiful.
When you walk on soft soils as sand you can see little conic holes, which are the ant-traps of larvae stage of this kind of insect.

Preciosa imagen.
