Red-bellied Black Snake

Pseudechis porphyriacus

Notes:

My favourite venomous Australian! This red-bellied black was on the lawn at Moffatdale Ridge winery where I was having lunch. It seemed quite happy slithering along the lawn (quite unusual to see one out in the open like that). A beautiful healthy specimen with vivid colouring, somewhere between 1.5 and 2 metres long. Despite being venomous and widely feared, red bellies are generally docile and will retreat rather than attack if threatened.

He is a handsome specimen - looks like he's been lunching at the winery too - can just see a bulge in pics 1 &2 maybe that's why he's out in the sun. Great pics Shanna !

Hi Alex, I was a fair distance away from it, I was up on a verandah. Probably 15 metres.

Terrific spotting! I love the black & red colors, especially in the 4th photo. I'm very glad to be following you on Noah now. It's great to find other reptile lovers on here and see their spottings, especially when that person is in a completely different part of the world. :)

I have probably seen more pythons than red-bellied blacks, but they are definitely prolific. We've had quite a few in care over the years.

Beautiful. These must be the most prolific snake on the east coast. I seem to find 5 of these to one of any others. Maybe it's just who you hang out with.
