Black-crowned night heron

Description:

Black-crested, black-billed bird, ~ 15 inches tall, with greyish-white breast.

Habitat:

Suburban neighborhood on insular tropical upland plateau.

Notes:

Spotted perched on the top of a discontinuity/dam/waterfall along an irrigation ditch, unfortunately backlit by a late afternoon sun. The Hawaiian name of this species is 'Auku'u.
