Description:

I found this bird in a city park. It has a black head, sides, and tail, with white stripes and patches. It has a long narrow beak. It was about 6 in. long.

Habitat:

The downy woodpecker is typically found in deciduous woods, open woodlands, and along streams. They generally feed in tall weeds. I found this particular bird in a city park, perched on a tree.

I agree with Ashley, this looks most like a Downy Woodpecker. There are a couple of Sapsuckers that may be found in your area, but they look much different. Here are a couple of links so you can compare:
