Wild olive tortoise leaf beetle, Chrysomelidae family.
See larva here
Tortoise beetles are my favorites! excellent spotting! and the larva is great!
You are totally correct in you reasoning Anne. Leaf beetles are often very host specific and the host plant is always useful to know. Any good entomologist must become a botanist too. Thank you for sharing this totally fascinating beetle and even more creepyly bizarre larva to complete its life cycle.
