Frog

Description:

Small (~2 cm in length) frogs that are dark brown with a light stripe running down the middle of the back.

Habitat:

Burrowed under the grass.

Notes:

I've cropped my photos so that the detail on these frogs can be seen, however I have included an uncropped photo for scale. They're around 2cm in length.

I think at this rate it's probably best to just leave it as Tomopterna spp. Yea, really upsetting to find them floating in the pool like that :/

Yea Amphibiaweb gives a description for T. cryptotis call and tells you where to find the description of T. tandyi call. Hopefully you can figure it out! And that is sad, I hate when things like that happen :/

I was just really lucky to find this little guy, they're incredibly difficult to spot. I've tried googling that and a few different sites redirect you to an original reference to get a description of the call. Maybe tomorrow when I have more energy for this, I'll try getting the ref! :) A lot of these little guys drowned in the pool that was nearby. Quite sad.

Oh, I bet! When I was there a year ago, we could hear the chorus from really far away, then we would get up close and hear them everywhere and couldn't find any of them haha. Hopefully you can figure out which one it is! If you Google their name with the word "call" after it, a few sites will at least describe the call if they don't have a recording of it

Yes I did, they're incredibly loud for such small creatures! I'll have a look on youtube, not sure how easy that's going to be!

Did you get to hear it call? I'm not sure how similar their calls are, I have a CD of them but I know that doesn't help you haha. Maybe try YouTube?

Thanks Ashley, I'll try to find sound clips of the different calls - hopefully that will help with the ID.

It's either the Tremolo sand frog (Tomopterna cryptotis) or the Tandy's sand frog (Tomopterna tandyi), but both are in range and they are impossible to tell apart unless you hear the call or do genetic testing
