A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Yoyetta sp
This narrow bodied small cicada-like insect was about 25 mm long. Its head, thorax and eyes were black as were the membranous wings. The abdominal segments were a flame-coloured yellow with black markings along the midline of each segment. The last abdominal segment aslo showed some yellow colour
These were spotted in large numbers on a warm evening, beside gum trees but under a bright light.
There are a few species that look the same so I hesitate to state the species. Family: Cicadidae

There are also many species of cicadetta to learn about. Not even sure I could tell a cicadetta from a yoyetta yetta.
Really interesting, I'm currently investigating a similar beastie in Adelaide SA. Did you video them? I think the sound they make seperates and dictates the species which could be a version of Tristrigata. See http://sci-s03.bacs.uq.edu.au/ins-info/C... for info (Lindsay Popple). I video a tree where the sound is coming from, and edit the sound in audacity. Then I compare the sound file to those on the above mentioned site. If I do catch one, I give the specimen to the museum so the species can be reviewed and identified.
Perfect, Mark !

Thanks Cindy. I will add this one to the Hoppers mission -did not know Cicadas were included.
Nice one! I really like the second image with the purple sheen on the wings. Please consider adding to The Hoppers mission: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8096...
