This looks a lot like a tenebrionid to me. Or a darkling beetle...

There is a further complication here in that the soil in the area where the photo was taken is red and the beetle might in fact be more black that the reddish brown it is on the photos. Have been searching, but not found an ID yet.

I agree with LarsKorb that it is not a weevil as I first thought. It has not bent (geniculate) antennae as weevils do..
