Charadrius vociferus
A medium-sized plover with brown wings and white breast with two black neck bands. They have a orange-red eyering. The common name Killdeer comes from their frequently heard call. It is the most widely spread shorebird in North America.
Although Killdeer are considered shorebirds, they often live far from water. They live in grassland habitats such as fields, meadows, and pastures
The killdeer is also easily identified by its unusual run-and-stop gait and its ruse to lure trespassers from its nest area. It is capable of reaching 5 miles per hour as a runner and 50 mph on the wing.
