Tiger Crane Fly

Nephrotoma wulpiana

Description:

Reddish brown with striping on thorax area. Very long legs. Came in for a landing in the oregano while I was trying to get good photos of the Striped Lynx Spider I posted before this.

Notes:

Crane Flies are often mistaken for giant mosquitos. They are also called "Mosquito Eaters or Skeeter Eaters" by some. In fact, crane flies are harmless flies that live long enough to mate and lay eggs (in the case of the females). Adult crane flies do not even eat.
