Arboreal Salamander

Aneides lugubris

Description:

adult salamander, medium brown with gold spotting.

Habitat:

Coastal California into mexico, especially Coastal Oak wetlands. This one was in my driveway after a heavy rain, and was happy to find itself back under leaf cover, I am sure, after I rescued it from certain death at the hands of local crows and jays. I am somewhat glad I did not know beforehand that these guys can give a pretty intense bite.
