Hi there. Since you know the identity of your organism, please go ahead and fill in the scientific name field. This allows the spotting to fully enter the database and become complete, letting groups and individuals use the data and find your spotting. It also takes the spotting off the "unidentified" list. Nice call matthewryanre on the Smooth Earth Snake identification tip. My field guide mentioned the black dots on the snake's dorsal side, and the spotting location makes sense. I've yet to see one in the wild myself, but I hope to! Nice spotting CEJ!!

This is too awesome. It looks like a Smooth earth snake - Virginia valeriae. They hang out in decaying logs. Every one that I have seen has actually been in or under a log when I found it.
