Coral fungus

Clavulina coralloides

Description:

A branched white fungus about 80mm high. The bases of the fruiting bodies were smooth and thick with tips either frilly or toothed, some with brown tips. Some of these branches were cream coloured indicating age.

Habitat:

growing in small clumps amongst grass and leaf litter under Eucalyptus trees.

Notes:

Clavulina coralloides is said to resemble various other species and is seen in temperate regions of the world. Confirmation of this species is said to be difficult. The fungus is commonly also referred to as Clavulina cristata.

Martin, you might have seen this on flickr - a similar specimen

-they look so varied. Bruce Fuhrer describes them as having variable tips -frills or teeth. I think we might need to study the spores to identify the species.

This seems to have an unusual tip being more pointy than others.
