I have photographed both gender of the same insect - in Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro - which were identified as Machima spp.

I can't tell you how much I love this creature! I want to say that this is actually a species of Lichen Katydid perhaps (and female).
Very similar color pattern as this PN spotting though yours is not nearly as spiky:
