Yes Leuba, we have both the smooth billed and the grooved billed here in Costa Rica and you are correct...it depends on the upper part of the bill...
a strangely attractive bird - Is it a groove or ridge on its upper beak? great photo Matthew - they look like a "strong and silent" type of bird !?
