Tent caterpillars

Malacosoma californicum

Description:

Small caterpillars, 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches long in colonies within their silk tent.

Habitat:

Ponderosa & jackpine forest, most tents are on bitterbrush, but I did find one on a small ponderosa.

Notes:

These are failrly scattered this year, I've seen much larger concentrations of them in previous years. The smaller ones in the first photo were taken on May 8, the others on May 28, 2012
